August Empties

I have a pretty good new collection of empties this month, including some more makeup. As I have been focusing on my deluxe samples and stuff that is partially used, I’ve been able to get through quite a bit. I also have an Ipsy subscription, which means I’m always getting new samples. I have been pretty good about not buying new stuff, though I’ve bought a few things here and there- so I’ve been more on a “low buy” not a true “no buy.” A no buy would be REALLY hard for me. But I’m definitely being more thoughtful about what I am buying, instead of just automatically snatching things up without thinking about whether I trult need it. Progress!

Here is what I used up over the last month:

Skincare Products

As you can see, most of the skincare stuff I got through this month is samples. But, that’s the majority of my skincare collection. I have made a lot of progress in getting through samples. In fact, I got through almost all my cleansers. I still have a ton of sunscreens though. First world problems.

august empties skin care

1. Fresh Soy Face Cleanser sample (.13 oz)

2. Ole Henrikson Protect the Turth SPF 50+ Sunscreen deluxe sample ( .5 oz). This stuff is AMAZING! First, it smells like lemon cake. Secondly, it is SO moisturizing. It has the perfect consistency between liquid and cream. Love this stuff and it is high on my list of products that I would repurchase as my everyday sunscreen.

3. Jack Black Deep Dive Glycolic Facial Cleanser sample (.07 oz)

4. Jack Black Protein Skin Serum sample (.07 oz)

5. Perricone MD Cold Plasma sample (.07 oz)

6. Lancome Advanced Genifique Youth Activating Concentrate sample (.03 oz)

7. First Aid Beauty Skin Rescue Deep Cleanser with Red Clay deluxe sample (1.0 oz). This was a nice cleanser, but it is a little too drying for my skin. If you have oily skin, this would be great, though.

8. Murad Rapid Collagen Infusion sample (.125 oz)

9. Do Not Age with Dr. Brandt transforming pearl serum sample (.034 oz)

10. Fresh Rose Face Mask sample (.13 oz). This was a really nice mask. I would describe it as calming and soothing. I would definitely consider repurchasing again.

11. Garnier Nourishing Cleansing sample (.16 oz)

12. Murad Daily Moisture Charge SPF 30 sample (.13 oz)

13. Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser deluxe sample (1.0 oz). I got this in a Birchbox a loooooooog time ago. It is one of those cleansers that you put on dry skin, then massage off with a damp muslin cloth (which came with the cleansers). I didn’t love it. First, it smelled very strongly of eucalyptus, which I don’t like. Some people love that smell, but I’m not one of them. It was nice and moisturizing, but I am used to using my Clarisonic and I didn’t feel like this cleaned off my makeup as well. I would not repurchase.

14. Whish Correcting Gel deluxe sample (.75 oz). This was a weird product. It had a very strong, sweet scent. One of the main ingredients is manuka honey and it definitely had a honey/gel-like consistency. It felt very sticky. It also seemed to sit on the face and not absorb really well. It did leave my face soft though. I would most likely not repurchase, I prefer creamier night time moisturizers.

15. Dr. Jart Ceramidin Cream deluxe sample (no size listed). This stuff is extremely thick. If you have any dry patches or extremely dry skin, this would be amazing. Other than that, I think it would be too heavy to use every day. I would not repurchase.

16. Generic Cetaphil full sized (16 oz). As I’ve said in many posts, this was my go-to cleanser for a long time when I was struggling with acne. It is really amazing, especially for the price. You could use this everyday and it would take ~8 months to get through this bottle. The brand-name Cetaphil is about $12 for the bottle and the generic (I can’t tell a difference between them) is about $8. It is awesome. I will definitely repurchase at some point in the future.

17. Clinique Moisture Surge Face Spray full size (4.2 oz). I bought this product on the recommendation of Tarababyz from YouTube. I used it to prep my face before my makeup and to soften my look if it was too powdery. I did like it. It had a nice fine mist, and left my skin feeling hydrated. I am currently using the Smashbox Primer Water and so far I like this one better. What other face mists should I try? Want to try Mac Fix+ but need recommendations for others.

18. Radical Skin Care Age Defying Exfoliating Pads sample (15 pads). I got these as a GWP at Sephora earlier this year and finally got around to using them. They were great! You use them after cleansing at night and they act like a low level peel I think? They definitely tingled the skin. If you have any irritated skin, you can feel it. I can imagine it would be quite painful back when I had my acne struggles. But with the normal skin I have now, it tingled, but it was nothing painful. It definitely made my skin look fresh and exfoliated any dry skin I had. II loved this product and would repurchase.

19. Caudelie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum sample (.06 oz).

20. Vasanti Brighten Up! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator deluxe sample (.71 oz). This is another Birchbox sample. It was okay. I definitely prefer the Kate Somerville exfoliator to this one. I would not repurchase.

21. Origins VitaZing SPF 15 Energy Boosting Moisturizer with Mangosteen deluxe sample (.5 oz). I LOVE THIS PRODUCT! It is so moisturizing (very similar in texture to the Ole Henrikson sunscreen) and it also has a nice cooling effect. It isn’t tingly, just a nice coolness to the skin. It feels amazing. I guess that’s the mangosteen? I have another deluxe sample of this stuff that I’m dying to use but I am trying to finish a few sunscreens that are about to expire first. When I get through a bunch of my sunscreens, this will be the first product I repurchase.

22. Boscia Self-Defense Vital Antioxidant Moisture Broad Spectrum SPF 30 deluxe sample (.5 oz). This had a nice texture and I generally like every Boscia product I try. But I just like the Origins and Ole Henrikson sunscreens so much more, so I would not repurchase.

Makeup Products

I also finished a good number of makeup products this month- YAY! I have ahad a few of these forever, so I was really happy to be done with them (Bare Minerals mineral veil, I am looking at you). If you are following my project pan, you’ll also notice I finished my first product!

august empties makeup

1. Josie Maran Argan Triple Volume Mascara deluxe sample (.14 oz). I got this in some sort of Sephora kit….maybe the Glitz and Glam from a couple of years ago? Anyway, I was not looking forward to using it for some reason (hence why I hoarded it for so long) but it was actually nice! I generally like to layer a volumizing mascara with a lengthening one, which is what I did with this. It had a nice texture, and a fat wand that was great for getting thick lashes. I don’t think Josie Maran makes this anymore, so I can’t repurchase even if I didn’t have 40 mascaras to get through first!

2. Dior Diorshow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum deluxe sample (.13 oz). I got this as a 100 point Sephora perk. I actually used a full sized one in the past and I can’t remember if I loved it but I definitely didn’t hate it. This time around I liked it. I feel like it does definitely give you fuller lashes than mascara alone does. However, it is pretty expensive to purchase a full size and I feel like there has to be a cheaper option. Let me know if you know of one.

3. Smashbox Bronze Lights Bronzer in Sunset Matte deluxe sample (.13 oz). I can’t remember where I got this, but I’ve had it forever, so I wanted to use it up. I did like it. It’s matte, not too dark and blended out nicely. I wish it was every so slightly more cool toned, but it definitely wasn’t a deal breaker. While I liked this product, I have other bronzers that I like a lot more, so I won’t repurchase.

4. The Balm Blush in Hot Mama! deluxe sample (.035 oz). This is another Birchbox sample. I really liked this blush. The color is very flattering on my skin and it blends out really well. I have heard this is a dupe for Nars Orgasm. I have used up a deluxe size of Orgasm in the past and it is very similar. I would definitely consider repurchasing, though I have a bunch of similar toned blushes to get through first.

5. Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheer sample (.16 oz). I got this as part of a GWP Giorgio Armani set Sephora was giving away recently. I didn’t like it. Apparently, it works like a liquid luminizer. You can mix it with your foundation or apply it first and wwear foundation on top for a glowy look. This product was way too shimmery though. I don’t think it made me look naturally glowing. I looked like a disco ball. I will not purchase a full size.

6. Bare Minerals Mineral Veil jumbo size (.84 oz). I have used BM mineral veil forever. I think it is really underrated. People are obsessed with the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders, but honestly, I think this is just as good. Since I used this up, I have been using my ambient lighting pallet and I think they really give the same glowy effect. A loose powder is of course a lot less convenient, but I they have a pressed version now. I got a deluxe sample size in a recent kit I purchased at Ulta. I am going to see how I like that, but either way I will be repurchasing one of the two formats of this product.

6. Tarte The Sculptor Contouring Face Slenderizer in Park Ave Princess deluxe sample (.06 oz). This is my first Project 10 Pan completion! I got it in the recent Sephora Bronze Bares all kit. It is a really nice consistency, very easy to use and blends sooooooo easily for a natural look. The downsides are that it is too orange for my taste and you actually go through the product very quickly. If you use it everyday, you would use up a full size product in 4-6 weeks. It takes months to use up the powder version of a product even when using everyday. So this is an expensive option. I am going to try other stick forms of bronzers that are better shades as I did like apply the product that way. It makes it really easy!

7. Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden and Sin samples (no size listed). I like Urban Decay eye primers. And I feel like they come as samples with so many different things, that I’ve actually never had to buy a full size. I usually use the RMS Uncoverup Concealor in 01 as my daily eyeshadow base, but I would pruchase a full size of this product. I’d probably get the anti-aging formula as that is the best for my dry lids.

Hair Products

I am not as big of a product junkie on my hair. My hair routine is pretty low-maintenance, actually. About once a month, I f=go get a blowout at Drybar. It’s only $35 and my hair looks so much better than when I try to blow dry it. In between blowouts, I wash my hair every three days and let it air dry. In between washes, I use dry shampoo, especially after working out in the morning before work. I also use a shine mist and sometimes a texturizer if I want a beachy look. I spend about 5 minutes on my hair on average each day. Thank god, because it gives me more time to play with makeup. Ha! Anyway, these are my hair product empties for August.

august empties hair

1. Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo full size (3.5 oz). This was the first dry shampoo I ever used and it is amazing. I love the smell (every Drybar product has the same smell). Disclaimer: some people hate the smell, so just be aware. And it is really great at absorbing oil and adding lift to the roots. However, I saw Kathleen Lights from YouTube talking about the Battiste dry shampoos, so I tried that. It is about $8/bottle vs. $22 for a smaller bottle from Drybar. I have to say, while I do like the Drybar product more, the Battiste dry shampoo is pretty darn good. And given that I go through almost a bottle of this stuff a month, I am going to buy the Battiste a lot more often from now on.

2. Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray deluxe sample (1.7 oz). I got this in some kind of kit (are you noticing a pattern yet? I love Sephora kits!). I loved it. It added the perfect amount of texture to my ends and extended If you saw my recent Sephora Haul, you’ll remember that I purchased the Bumble and Bumble Surf Infusion spray which is similar to this, but according to the sales woman at Sephora it is less drying.

Project Pan- Bronzers

So I guess I don’t have THAT many Bronzers either? I did just finish up 2 so that helps. But even taking that into account, my bronzer collection is manageable. Score one for me in my fight against makeup hoarding. Wait until I show you my eyeshadow palette collection…eke! I also included my Naked Flushed palettes in this section as it seemed the most appropriate. Here are my bronzers:

1. Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Bronzer in Park Ave Princess deluxe sample (.11 oz). I got this in the recent Sephora Bronze Bares All kit. I actually have this in a Tarte eyeshadow palette and it is okay. It is a little too shimmery for my liking, but it works for certain looks.

2. Naked Flushed in Streak (.49 oz). I’m crazy and bought the Naked Vault when it was re-released this past spring. I only had the Naked 3 prior and had always wanted the other eye pallets and it was a really good deal. I haven’t used these much recently because I’ve been focusing on my Project Pan blush and bronzer, but I do like these for travel. I take this, foundation, concealer, an eye pallet and a couple of lipsticks and I’m good to go. This is my favorite of the Naked Flushed sets, as it goes the best with my skin tone. I love the blush! The highlighter is nice too and the bronzer is a little orange but workable.

3. Naked Flushed in Naked (.49 oz). This highlighter is too dark for me, but I can use it as a blush topper. The blush is also dark, but can be used for a dramatic look or with a very light hand. The bronzer is actually good for my skin tone, which means it is too light for anyone that the blush and highlight works for….odd.

4. Naked Flushed in Streak (.49 oz). I like this set too. It is the peachy hued of the bunch. Now that I am looking at it, I should see how this highlight compares to BECCA’s Champagne Pop….they look really similar in the pan. This one might be a little darker.

5. Too Face Soleil Matte Bronzer in Chocolate Soleil deluxe sample (.08 oz). I got this in my July Ipsy bag. SCORE! I have actually used up a full size of this bronzer before and I love it. It is a great gray-toned contour shade and it is really blendable. And it smells like chocolate. LOVE. This has been my everyday bronzer since using up my Project 10 Pan bronzer (spoiler alert!). I will repurchase when I use up this deluxe sample.

As I said at the beginning of this post, I think my bronzer collection is manageable. After finishing up my Project 10 Pan bronzer- the tarte Slenderizer in Park Ave Princess- I want to try another bronzer in stick form. I did really like the formula of the tarte product, but it is too orange for my liking. I am thinking about the Smashbox pencil set. I’ve also been eyeing the Marc Jacobs Light Filtering Contour Powder. I’d like to use up another bronzer before purchasing anything though. Maybe I will start working on the tarte deluxe sample I have and once I get through that I will purchase the Smashbox set or the Marc Jacobs compact. 5 bronzers it is!

Goal: 5 bronzers

Project 10 Pan Update #1

I’ve made pretty good progress so far on the 10 products I’m trying to finish over the course of 10 weeks. I think I will have finished some by my next update. However, I am realizing it will be nearly impossible to finish a couple of these in 10 weeks. But I will do my best! Here is where I am after 2 weeks:

ole henrikson beginning          ole henrikson 2 weeks

July 26, 2015                                      August 10, 2015

1. Ole Henrikson Ultimate Lift Eye Gel deluxe sample (.5 oz) You can’t see the progress very well in pictures due to the color of the gel, but I did make a decent dent in this. I used it everyday before I went to bed. It is probably 1/3 full. I still don’t love this stuff. It has a weird, sticky consistency. I need a thicke cream for my dry skin.

July 26, 2015                                                  August 10, 2015

2. Bobbi Brown Face Touch Up Stick (.08 oz) You can see a little progress here. I have only been using this on my blemishes as I recently realized this shouldn’t be used on the under eye area. My skin has been pretty good so I only use a little each day. Hopefully I can still finish this by the end of the 10 weeks.

3. Tre’stique Mini Shadow Crayon Marimoto Pink Pearl (.02 oz) I made some progress here, but not very much. This product was brand new 2 weeks ago. I’ve used it probably 8-10 times over the last 2 weeks. I DO NOT like it. Let me preface this by saying that I have extremely dry eyelids. Sometimes they are just dry but lately they have gotten so bad that I get dry patches that start flaky. Even when the dryness is under control, they can look aged. This color and formula just don’t do me any favors, unfortunately. It’s really shiny and when I apply it to the lid, it literally sinks into every patch of dry skin. I use it as a base shadow/primer and I’ve been able to make that work. But I will be happy when this is gone.

4. Tarte The Sculptor Contouring Face Slenderizer in Park Ave Princess (.06 oz) I’m almost done with this! I probably have another week of use. I have been using it pretty much everyday. It is quite a creamy formula and I use it in the hollows of my cheeks, my forehead and under my chin. I really like the formula, I just wish the color wasn’t so warm. It is really easy to blend, but I’d prefer a cooler tone. Do any of you know of any cooler toned bronzers in a stick form like this? I knows Smashbox has one. Any others I should try?

too faced eyeliner

5. Too Faced 3-Way Lash Lining Tool Obviously I am not sure where I am with this, but it is still going strong. I use it almost everyday. I really do love this product. Once I get through the 18 million other black eyeliners I own, I will repurchase this one!

6. Shiseido Perfect Rouge Color RD 305 deluxe sample I only used this lipstick a couple of times over the last 2 weeks. Not sure why, because I do really like it. The color is flattering and the formula is very nice and very moisturizing. I just need to focus on using it consistently.

7. Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee (.18 oz)

I’ve made some progress here! I’m probably about halfway to hitting pan. I’ve used this almost everyday. There were a couple days that I didn’t wear makeup or this color didn’t go with my eye look. But this is a good everyday blush and it is great quality. Still not a big fan of the cream formula. I just prefer powder blushes. So I probably would not repurchase.

8. Buxom Divine Goddess Luminizer deluxe sample

It doesn’t look like I’ve made much progress here even though I’ve used it almost everyday. Ugh. I don’t use much. I mentioned in my first Project Pan post that this stuff has a tingly feel to it, similar to plumping lipsticks. I THOUGHT this effect faded after a few uses, but I used this mixed in with my foundation and yeah….it is still QUITE tingly. It definitely irritated my under eye area. Since then, I use before I put on foundation on the tops of my cheeks and my chin. The effect is really subtle. I am not loving this product.

9. Sephora Eyeshadow Color no. 63 Under the Covers deluxe sample (.07oz)

I used this product a couple of times. I really don’t like it. Originally I planned to use it as a brow bone highlight even though I prefer a matte. But this shade has a weird blue shift to it (or maybe it’s just gone bad?). Ugh. I may just toss this and substitute a different eye product. I will never use this up and I HATE using it.

stila 2 weeks

10. Stila Lip Glaze Color Jingle (.05 oz)

This was brand new at the start of my project pan and as you can see, it’s almost gone! I have used it most days over the past 2 weeks. I go back and forth on whether I like this product. It’s a super sticky gloss and it looks nice on. I just don’t love glosses that much. And I have a gazillion of them to get through.

So that’s it! I am pretty happy about my progress. Next update is in 2 weeks! Let me know if any of you are doing a Project Pan. I love reading the updates!

Project Pan- Highlighters

So I am realizing that the more I watch YouTube makeup collection videos, the more “reasonable” mine seems. Take my highlighter collection for example: 3 full sized products and 2 deluxe samples. Compared to the drawers and drawers full of products I’ve seen on YouTube, this seems puny. But do we really need more than a couple of these? Don’t answer that. Also keep in mind that I have highlighters in other face pallets, so this is just the highlighter in a package by itself. Not sure where to put the face pallets- in a category of their own? Hashtag makeuphoarderproblems. Here is what I have:

1. YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touche $42. I started using this stuff after my Mom recommended it to me a couple of years ago and I fell in love. This is probably my 4th repurchase. I have seen some reviews on YouTube that this isn’t dramatic enough. It is definitely subtle. But honestly, I don’t need to be going to work looking like JLo everyday. This is a natural looking, everyday highlight. It is ridiculously expensive, but I for some reason YSL (and Chanel) is a lot cheaper in Europe. I travel to Europe pretty regularly for work, so I stock up in the duty free stores whenever I go. I think I paid around $30 for this tube.

2. Benefit Watts Up deluxe sample $33 for the full size. This is the only highlighter in my collection that I’m sort of meh about. I don’t hate it, but I definitely don’t reach for it often. It’s shimmery and I don’t love the formulation as I feel like it’s hard to blend and doesn’t give the most natural look. I’ve used up a couple deluxe sizes of this. I feel like this product shows up in every Sephora kit and beauty subscription box. I wouldn’t purchase a full size.

3. BECCA X Jaclyn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Champagne Pop $38. I am not sure why I bought this, honestly. I already have a shimmery highlighter and I don’t use them that often- definitely not everyday. I have used this a few times and do like it. The BECCA formulation is really nice.

4. BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Opal deluxe Sample $38 for the full size. I got this in the recent Bronze Bares All kit from Sephora. This is a great shade. I wear it when I go out at night and it makes my skin radiant without emphasizing pores the way shimmer can. If I ever get through my other shimmery highlights, I would purchase the full size.

5. Burberry Fresh Glow Luminous Highlighting Powder in Nude Radiance 01 $52 but it’s been discontinued. I heard about this from Tarababyz on YouTube. It was limited edition or it’s been discontinued, so I had to search for it, but there are sites out there still selling it (at a discount, no less!). I love this product. LOVE. It is really light and pigmented, but blends easily to give a nice, everyday highlight. It is matte/satin finish so this product is amazing if you don’t want shimmer. I either use this or the YSL Touche Eclat on a daily basis. I may even buy a back up since it is discontinued.

I did buy the BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Opal in the liquid form last weekend at the Sephora Rouge event, but I decided to return it (unopened). I can actually get that product really cheap through Verizon Rewards. And I don’t really need it at the moment.

So that’s it. Seems pretty reasonable, right? I don’t really have a need to cut down on the number of highlights I have, but I am not going to be adding to my collection either. I think I will try to use up the Watts Up and then keep the collection to 4 products.

Goal: 4 highlighters

Sephora VIB Rouge Beauty Before Brunch Haul

Sigh. I am not supposed to be buying makeup right now. When I got the invite for the VIB Rouge Event, I thought, “Oh, I want to get the Makeup Eraser. That will be the only thing I buy.” Says the makeup addict. Anyway, on the bright side- I really didn’t buy anything in the categories that I have a TON of product. I bought mostly lipsticks. I have a fair amount of lipsticks, as you’ll see when I get to that part of my makeup inventory. But I don’t have a CRAZY amount (says the makeup addict). And I only bought colors that I don’t have dupes for.

Anyway, the event was cool. No discount, but 4x points on purchases and a goodie bag and food. I was surprised to see how many other crazy makeup addicts there are….it was quite crowded! Here is what I picked up:

1. Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lip stick in Melted Strawberry. I love these. I have 3 other shades and I’ve been dying to get this one since I swatched it a few months ago.

2. Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Armaggedon. I have heard so many good things about this product and the color blew me away when I swatched it. It is a BRIGHT carnation pink.

3. Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lip stick in Melted Villian. This color is amazing! I have been really wanting to get a dark, vampy lipstick and I love this shade. I do have a Chanel lipstick that is similar, but this one is a bit darker and more matte. I am so excited to wear this!

4. Sephora Cream Lip Stain in Polished Purple. This sort of looks like the same color as melted villian, but it’s brighter and has a bit more shine.

5. BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Liquid in Moonstone. I got a sample of this and loved it. I got the smaller size (.68 oz) because you only need a TINY bit to get the effect. This tube will probably last me 5 years.

6. Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Agatha. I’ve been on the hunt for a good nude lipstick ever since I finished my MAC Cremeshene in Japanese Maple. Most nudes I come across are either too brown or too pink or too dark for my taste. I like a really light, slightly peachy nude. And this color is pretty much that. I used up a deluxe sample of another KVD Studded Kiss lipstick and I know I like the formula.

6. Clinique Lip Pop Color + Primer in Grape Pop. So apparently, the purple lipsticks were calling my name today, eh? I’ve been wanting to try this formula for a while, they seem to get really good reviews. I wore this the rest of the day today and yeah, it’s really purple. It’s not super long wearing, but it doesn’t dry out my lips either. Thumbs up.

7. Beauty Blender. I just hopped on the Beauty Blender train a couple of months ago. Like most rational people, I thought spending $20 on a tiny sponge was insanity. I bought a couple of knock offs and wasn’t impressed. I finally gave in and now understand what all the hype is about. These sponges really do blend makeup like a dream. They are worth the money. I think you’re supposed to change them out every 3-4 months, right? So this is my back up.

8. Makeup Eraser. I’m super intrigued by this product. It really does seem to work. I haven’t said much about this on my blog, but I’m actually a pretty die hard environmentalist. I realize this is VERY contradictory to the the fact that I am a hyper-consumer of makeup, but that’s a topic for another blog. I bring this up because I refuse to buy makeup remover wipes. It just seems SO wasteful. But is using cotton balls and a bottle of makeup remover any better? Probably only slightly so. “Wouldn’t it be awesome if there was a makeup remover cloth that I could reuse over and over?” I would ask myself. Seriously, I have thought about this for years! And here it is! I am really hoping I like it because it is the answer to my environmentalist/makeup addict dreams.

9. Bumble and Bumble Surf Infusion. I got a deluxe sample of the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray and loved it. It adds texture without making my hair crunchy. I was looking at it in store and one of the Sephora girls suggested I try the Surf Infusion (I think they are roughly the same price) as it is less drying. I tried it in store and loved it. I really only use this type of spray a couple times a week and only a few spritzes, so I think this will last me a while. I should have probably gotten the smaller size….

10. Sample Bag. This had some good stuff including: A L’Occitane hand cream (LOVE this stuff), Boscia Detoxifying Black Cleanser, Bare Minerals Marvelous Moxie Lip Gloss in Maverick, Formula X Sheer Strength Nail Polish in Wondrous, Benefit the Porefessional Primer, Chloe Perfume, Korres Wild Rose Advanced Brightening Sleeping Facial, and Fresh Rose Face Mask. Pretty excited about the Boscia, Korres and Fresh skincare stuff as well as the L’Occitane lotion which is amazing. Everything else is meh.

So yeah, that was a lot of makeup for someone who doesn’t need any! But as I said at the beginning of this post, at least I stuck to makeup categories where I don’t have a ridiculous amount of product already and I didn’t buy anything that I already have a dupe for in my collection. Baby steps, right?

Project Pan- Concealers

As you can see, I actually have a reasonable number of concealers. I think that’s mostly because I don’t need a concealer for blemishes very often. I do get some hormonal acne (read: on the jaw line), but the blemishes are larger and not super red (usually). A layer of foundation usually takes care of the hormonal acne. I can’t even tell you how awesome this is, as I spent a lot of my 20s fighting horrible acne. HORRIBLE. The moral of the story being- I only use concealer under my eyes on a regular basis. Here is what I use:

1. Makeup Forever Full Cover Concealer (.5 oz). This stuff is awesome. As the name states, it is VERY full coverage. It is a little dry and thick for use under the eye, which is what I bought it for. So, I don’t use it that often and a little goes a LONG way. I am thinking that maybe I can mix it with some moisturizer and it would be a great light coverage foundation? If you need help covering discoloration or acne, I would highly recommend this product.

2. BECCA Under Eye Brightening Corrector (.16oz). I use this before I put on my under eye concealer, When I first bought this, I loved it. It definitely gives a glowy, bright look to the under eye area. But, it is pretty thick, almost like a paste. I am not sure if it is this product or my concealer, but I get a lot of creasing. Once I finish my current concealer, I will know better what is causing the creasing.

3. Lancome Effacernes Under Eye Concealer deluxe sample (.23 oz). I really love this stuff for under the eye. However, because I’ve had the Bobbi Brown concealer longer, I want to use that up before I use this daily.

4. Bobbi Brown Face Touch Up Stick (.08 oz). I bought this to cover blemishes, but the shade I bought is slightly too light for that, so I’ve been using it under my eyes. I just went back to the Sephora website and it specifically says that this product is NOT meant for the under eye area. Whoops. I can see why it says that. This formula is way too thick for under eyes and it creases like a mofo. I guess I will go back to the Lancome under the eye and use this one for blemishes.

I don’t actually have a goal to cut down on the number of concealers in my stash, although I definitely won’t be buying more until I finish one of these.

Goal: 3-4 concealers/correctors

Project 10 Pan

Okay, so I decided to actually get started on a Project Pan. Since I started this blog, I’ve whittled down my beauty products collection and even focused on finishing up a few products. But, I never set a goal or started an actual Project Pan. I decided to start with 10 products. Some of these are deluxe sizes. I wanted to make this first round fairly easy. I want to actually stick with the project and if the products will be impossible to finish, that won’t happen. I’m planning on working on these for 10 weeks. I should be able to use most of these up in that time frame, but we shall see. So here they are!

ole henrikson beginning

1. Ole Henrikson Ultimate Lift Eye Gel deluxe sample (.5 oz)

When I started to inventory my beauty product stash about a month and a half ago, I realized this completely untouched gel was going to expire in 3 months. So I started using it everyday. Right now it is probably 40% full. I don’t love this product, honestly. I think I would prefer a cream. I just don’t know if this is moisturizing enough for me. This would be good for someone with oily skin, though.

Bobbi Borwn beginning

2. Bobbi Brown Face Touch Up Stick (.08 oz)

I have had this for 2 years, so I know it will be going bad soon. I feel pretty ambivalent about this product. I originally bought it to cover up blemishes. However, this product is too light for that. I would need the next darkest shade as this is better for under the eyes. So that’s how I’ve been using it. However, I am not sure I love the formula for under the eye. It is a little thick and creases, so I end up blending out the area several times so it doesn’t look cakey.

trestique beginning

3. Tre’stique Mini Shadow Crayon Marimoto Pink Pearl (.02 oz)

I got this in my June Ipsy bag and I’ve never used it. I have swatched it and think it will be good as a inner corner highlight or all over the lid on light makeup days. I think it is small enough to use up fairly quickly.

tarte beginning

4. Tarte The Sculptor Contouring Face Slenderizer in Park Ave Princess (.06 oz)

I got this as part of the recent Sephora Bronze Bares All set. I was a little hesitant about using a cream bronzer. However, this pencil is really easy to use and the formula is SUPER easy to blend. The only downside is that it is an orange hued product, which isn’t the best for a contour. If this was a cool toned grayish brown? It would be holy grail for me. I should say that I have only used this product about 5 times. I’ve read in reviews that the stick is quite soft and it breaks for a lot of people…and I can see that. You have to be very, very careful about not applying too much pressure when using this product. And even doing that, the tip of this stick looks like it is about to break off. Stay tuned!

5. Too Faced 3-Way Lash Lining Tool

I got this in a Sephora kit maybe a year ago? I just pulled it out a few weeks ago and actually really love it! It’s funny, because NOBODY on YouTube talks about this product, but it really is amazing, in my opinion. The concept is that you can use this liner for tight lining, a very thin eyeline or a traditional cat eye. It really does work well and is very user friendly, even for someone like me who doesn’t have the steadiest hand with liquid liner. AND, it stays put. No transfer whatsoever to the upper lid.

Shiseido lipstick beginning

6. Shiseido Perfect Rouge Color RD 305 deluxe sample

I got this deluxe sample as a giveaway from Sephora a realllllly long time ago. I do like it, I just was shy about using a red lipstick. It looks darker red in the bullet, but on my lips it is a pretty rosy red. The last year or so though, I’ve really gotten into bold lip colors. So I figured this would be a great lipstick for this project pan. It is getting old and I don’t want it to go bad.

josie maran beginning

7. Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee

This was part of the Sephora Glitz and Glam kit a couple of years ago. I didn’t use it for a long time because I was afraid of using a cream blush. Then, when I first started using it, I HATED IT! Because I’ve struggled with acne in the past, I felt like it clung to the tiny discoloration and acne scars on my cheeks. Also, it seemed really hard to blend. I have since figured out a way to apply it that looks great. I use my ELF stippling brush and swirl it on my cheeks then take a damp beauty blender to blend the edges. I still have SOME clinging of the product to my acne scarring, but after I apply my finishing powder, it is really minimal. As you can see, this is about 80% full. If I use this everyday, I should be able to get close to finishing it in the 10 weeks for this project.

8. Buxom Divine Goddess Luminizer deluxe sample

I got this as part of a 500 point perk from Sephora a couple of years ago. I believe it is 1 oz, but all the writing has rubbed off, so I am not sure. I do like this product. When I first used it, it had a VERY, VERY tingly feeling on the skin. Almost like the sensation of using a lip plumper on your face. So obviously I had to be careful about how I used it. I am not sure why Buxom decided that this was a good idea. What benefit does adding a skin irritant to the product have? At least on the lips, it can plump them. But for a face product? It just seems odd to me. Luckily, this tingly feeling went away after maybe 5 uses. Now it just acts as a cream luminizer. I usually use it mixed in with my foundation when I want a glowing look. For this project, I will probably also use it as a highlighter.

sephora eyeshadow beginning

9. Sephora Eyeshadow Color no. 63 Under the Covers deluxe sample (.07oz)

I don’t remember where or when I got this product. I feel like it was part of a kit or it was a giveaway, because it isn’t something i would normally buy. Anyway, as you can see, it broke. When I used it recently, I found that it is actually quite nice as an inner corner highlight. That is probably how I will use it during this project.

10. Stila Lip Glaze Color Jingle (.05 oz)

I went on a bit of a Stila Lip Glaze buying spree a couple years ago. This was before I really wore lipstick, so I was obsessed with lip glosses and this formula in particular. Now having tried other brands, I can say that I don’t love this formula. It is extremely sticky and the packaging is a pain in the butt. Also, the color isn’t extremely pigmented, so there’s really no need to have more than one, as they look pretty similar on the lips, even if the colors look different in the tube. I probably have like 7 of these and I need to get rid of them. I may end up gifting them, but I did want to focus on using them as well. They are actually fairly easy to use up as long as you use them most days.

So that’s my Project 10 pan. I am planning on doing an update every 2 weeks. Here’s hoping most of these products are gone in 10 weeks!

Empties!

So I know I haven’t gotten through my entire makeup collection, but I have a ton of empties to share. I started saving them at the same time I started this blog, thinking I would share these every couple weeks as I whittled down my collection. Well, good intentions can’t compete with an insane workload and travel schedule! I am going to try to do these every few weeks from now on. I broke this post down into skincare, makeup and self tanning. In the future I probably won’t have this many!

Skincare Products

So I’ve gone through a decent amount of skincare stuff! I know a lot of these are samples or deluxe sample, but it still feels great to finish product and declutter!

skin care empties

1. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream sample

2. Dr. Jart Ceramidin Cream sample

3. Murad Acne and Wrinkle Reducer sample

4. Boscia Tsubaki Beuaty Oil deluxe sample

5. Meaningful Beauty Glowing Serum deluxe sample. I got this as a free sample with my WEN subscription shipment (I’ve since canceled). It’s actually nice. I’m now sure if it made me “glow” but it smelled nice and was moisturizing. Sadly, I was not transformed into Cindy Crawford.

6. Murad Intensive Wrinkle Reducer. Not sure if this did anything. It felt nice. Meh.

7. Fresh Black Tea Age Delay Lotion sample

8. Philosophy Full of Promise Cream sample

9. Sephora Age Defying Moisture Cream SPF 15 deluxe sample

10. Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre sample

11. SK-II Cellumination Cream sample. I had high hopes for this, because there are so many rave reviews and it is CRAZY expensive. But it was underwhelming. Though to be fair, I only used it a half a dozen times.

12. Clarisonic Hydro Cleanser deluxe sample. I loved this cleanser. It may be my repurchase once I get through my cleanser stash.

13. Kate Sommerville Exfolikate deluxe sample. This stuff is SO, SO good. It’s intensely tingly, but did not irritate my skin. It just made it feel so soft and smooth. It is definitely a candidate for repurchase once I get through some of my other masks and exfoliaters.

14. Clarisonic Refreshing gel cleanser deluxe sample. This was a little bit drying on my normal/dry skin. It felt nice though. I think this would be great on oily skin.

15. Cetaphil Oil Control Foam Wash deluxe sample. I hated this stuff as it was super drying. I think I got it for free a long time ago from my dermatologist with her prescription for Retin-A. Anyway, I’m glad it’s GONE!

16. SK-II Facial Treatment Cleanser sample. As with the SK-II moisturizer, I was expecting this to be awesome. It SUCKED. Seriously. It had the consistency of shaving cream. And it dried my skin out to a ridiculous degree. I do have normal/dry skin, but wow I can’t believe how much I hated it. Luckily, this sample only lasted me 2 days.

17. Omorovicza Thermal Cleansing Balm sample

Makeup Products

While I haven’t officially started a Project Pan (stay tuned for that!) I did get through a couple of items I’ve had for a while.

makeup empties

1. Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer deluxe sample. This stuff is okay. Nothing special.

2. Benefit Watts Up deluxe sample. This was some kind of Sephora points perk/sample/part of a kit. I’ve actually gone through a couple of these deluxe samples. I like this stuff, but it isn’t my favorite highlighter. I prefer either a matte highlighter- think YSL Touche Eclat or Burberry Nude Glow or a real intense shimmer like the Becca shimmering skin perfectors. I’m not a huge fan of the cream stick formula either. I prefer a liquid or a powder. In short: I don’t hate this, but I wouldn’t purchase a full size.

3. Cover FX Cream Concealer sample. I really LOVED the formula of this concealer. The shade was too dark for my under eye area and it pulled really, really orange. But I would definitely repurchase if I can find the right shade.

4. Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Opal. I’ve now tried both the liquid and powder forms of this product (not the poured, cream version though). While both are really good, I have to say that I prefer the liquid! I feel like it gives me a glow but doesn’t show my pores the way the powder sometimes can.

5. Becca Radiant Skin Satin Finish Foundation

6. Marc Jacobs High Liner Gel Crayon deluxe sample. I get these every time they are offered as a Sephora point perk. The formula is amazing! It is so creamy and glides on so easily. And it stays in place. My only complaint- and I realize this sounds weird- is that it dries and gets stuck in between my eye lashes in large chunks. It almost feels like I have eye booger- gross, right?? Anyway, I’m worried that this will pull out my eyelashes. Am I a total weirdo?

7. Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara deluxe sample. I love this stuff. It’s funny because I feel like this mascara gets bad reviews on YouTube, but I think it’s awesome. I should throw in the caveat that I am lucky enough to have naturally long and fairly full eye lashes. Not bragging…I also have acne AND wrinkles!

8. YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils Babydoll MAscara deluxe sample. Gah I love this mascara so much. It is more lengthening than volumizing, but it doesn’t give a spider look. I used this in combination with the Smashbox mascara and the look that it created was AH.MAZE.ING.

9. MAC Cremsheen Lipstick in Japanese Maple. I had this lipstick forever. I did like the color and I love the formula. MAC lipsticks smell amazeballs, amirite? Anyway, I only had a little bit left, so I focused on using it up because it was most likely close to going bad.

Self Tanning Product

Sooooo, I don’t really self tan. I don’t know…I’m pale and embrace my paleness! I did get these products either in kits or as samples. So after hoarding them for a long time I figured I might as well use them. I can’t really give a great opinion about them as the samples are small and I’m no expert on these types of products.

self tanning products

1. Comodynes Self tanning Towelettes

2. Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pad

3. Tarte Brazillance Self Tanner

Project Pan- Foundations

foundations

I’ve been traveling for work a lot, so this post has been delayed. Sorry to my 5 readers! I set a goal to post twice a week from now on. This post is going to be awesome and worth the wait. Foundations! As you can see, I don’t have a ton of these. Compared to some of the collections I have seen on YouTube, this seems downright reasonable. Or maybe I’m warped and this is really ridiculous. Anyway, since I don’t have a gazillion of these, I tried to share a bit more of my thoughts on each as well as the prices. I have to say, I really do like all of these foundations.

1. Kat Von D Lockit Tatoo Foundation (1 oz) $35. Y’all. Y’ALL. I love this foundation. I got a sample in a Sephora order and immediately fell in love. First of all, the color match is absolutely perfect (Light 48). And the coverage is flawless. I have normal/dry skin, so I wouldn’t have expected to like the finish, but it’s not drying at all. It is a matte to satin finish and it is BEAUTIFUL! I personally don’t use this as an everyday foundation because it is so full coverage. But for a night out or a special occasion? It makes my skin look flawless.

2. It Cosmetics Your Skin but Better CC Cream (1.08 oz) $38. I haven’t actually used this yet but it has great reviews and I’m excited to try it.

3. Sephora Precision Mist Airbrush Foundation (2.5 oz) $28. This is an awesome everyday foundation. It gives a nice buildable coverage and a dewy finish. I don’t spray this directly on my face. I shake, spray onto my flat top foundation brush and swirl on my face. I usually build to medium coverage. Supposedly this foundation is a Dupe for the DiorFlash foundation but I have never tried it.

4. YSL Touche Eclat Foundation (1 oz) $57. This has been my daily foundation of late. It is a medium coverage, satin finish. I apply it with my fingers, then blend with my foundation brush and my Beauty Blender if there is any caking.

5. Diorskin Nude Skin-Glowing Foundation (1 oz) $50. This is very similar to the YSL foundation.

6. Bare Minerals Original Mineral Foundation (.28 oz) $28. This was my everyday foundation for almost 4 years. This was actually the first high end foundation I ever purchased and I’ve probably gone through at least 5 of these over the years. I used to really love this foundation and still use it on occasion, usually when I want a very natural finish. The major reason I stopped using it everyday was because I wanted a liquid foundation to use when I use liquid highlighters and blushes. Also, I noticed that this foundation makes my pores visible, which is weird because I don’t have large pores at all. So when I do use this, I apply a silicone-based primer through my t-zone and that helps.

7. Bare Minerals Bareskin Pure Brightening Serum Foundation deluxe sample (.5 oz) $29 for full size. I use this foundation when I want a very dewy, radiant look. The coverage is light to medium, so my skin has to be in pretty good shape for me to wear this, but it’s good for a summer beach or running errands day.

So even though this isn’t a ton of products compared to some of my other categories, they are all full size besides the last one. And no normal person needs 7 foundations. Also, the Dior and YSL foundations are pretty similar…..so maybe I should set a goal of 4. That’s reasonable, right? I’m thinking 1 full coverage, 1 everyday plus a couple of others with different finishes.

Goal: 4 foundations

The 5 Youtubers who feed my makeup addiction

I’ve mentioned before that I didn’t really get into makeup until my late 20s. I’ve worn makeup since I was a teen. But it pretty much consisted of drugstore foundation, black eyeliner on my upper lid and black mascara. Thatzit. All of that changed after my first trip to Sephora circa 2009. Since then, I have turned into a makeup junkie/crazy makeup hoarder. How do you justify your hoarding, you ask? Well, in no particular order, here are a few of the lovely ladies that make me feel like my obsession and borderline hoarding is totally normal.

1. Tarababyz I heart Tara for so many reasons. One, she has the most amazing makeup collection I’ve ever seen. For real. She did a two-part video covering her entire collection and it was more than 2 hours long! It’s pretty much a given that she’ll be picking up and reviewing any hot new makeup product. It’s so nice to be able to see her opinion and in-depth review on a product before I buy it. Secondly, she is an equal opportunity makeup junkie. She has the most extensive Tom Ford makeup collection I’ve seen on YouTube but she also loves ELF. Thirdly, her reviews are really thorough and thoughtful. Her videos are longer than a lot of Youtubers, which some people might not like, but I love it! Her product demos are great too, even though her makeup technique isn’t my style, I appreciate and respect her opinion. Lastly, I think she’s probably the most down-to-earth Youtuber in the makeup space. Listen, I don’t hate on anyone doing their thing. But there are some Youtubers I just can’t watch because they seem to be playing a part. I’m an introvert, so crazy bubbly people can sometimes be hard for me to relate to. Tara has a nice, calm demeanor. She doesn’t try to be funny or bubbly, she is just straightforward and matter-of-fact. Two thumbs up!

2. Kathleen Lights This girl is hilarious. And not in a “I’m trying to be funny” type of way. She’s just naturally goofy and cute. I want to be her friend! She’s also got some amazing tutorials. AMAZING. My favorite is Get Ready With Me! Date Night Makeup ft. Naked Basics Palette….like, how can someone make straight up black eye makeup look so amazing?!?!

3. EmilyNoel83 I love the reviews on this channel. Along with Tarababyz, I can count on Emily to review new products before I buy them. She is thorough but doesn’t drone on. And her demeanor is so calm and sweet without seeming fake. Also, even though I’m childless, I loved watching her go through pregnancy and now parenthood.

4. Karima McKimmie I love this Aussie! First of all, she is beyond gorgeous. The skin! The cheek bones! Gah! Beyond that, she does some pretty amazing tutorials. I love her high end tutorials in particular and how natural her looks are. So many Youtubers are more on the super-contoured, Kardashian vein. I like watching those, but frankly cannot pull off 99% of those looks. Karima’s looks, even the dramatic ones, are totally realistic and wearable.

5. RachhLoves Even though she is super bubbly and not as straightforward as the other Youtubers I’ve mentioned, I find her schtick really cute. She’s witty and just cute! And I look forward to her beauty favorites every month!

Thanks ladies, for feeding my soul and my addiction.
